Our natural resources are important as Gary rebuild its economy and improve the livelihood of its residents.  These natural resources not only have cultural and recreational value but one that must be preserved for the benefit of future generations of Gary residents.  For all to enjoy are the beaches and Lake Michigan, Marquette Park Lagoons, city parks, local rivers and streams, the Urban Forest with its many trees, rare and endangered species and plants, and preservation sites.

National Parks Services – Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore has more than 1,135 native plant species distributed over six plant communities. Among all the national parks in the United States, it ranks seventh in plant diversity. This is an amazing feat for 15,000+ acres.  The far western portion of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is in Gary which features the Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education and Miller Woods.
